The Barefoot Trail Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization dedicated to providing a beautiful forested park for individuals and families to get outdoors and exercise at least 30 minutes while reaping the health benefits of walking barefoot and grounding on manicured trails.
The Barefoot Trail is located in Bellemont, AZ, just 10 minutes by car west of Flagstaff, AZ along I-40. Take exit 185 off of the I-40 in Bellemont, AZ and proceed north towards the Pilot gas station. Follow the road east and drive the roundabout (take 3rd exit), and continue through to the stop sign. Drive west on Brannigan Park Road and in approx. 2.2 miles take a left onto Forest Service Road 9202K. Look for our park signs at the turn off. Drive 0.6 miles and turn left again onto Forest Service Road 146W. Drive 0.4 miles and the park will be on your right. Parking is limited. No park access through the ADOT rest stop. Please see our detailed map on the 'Contact Us' tab.
The trail is 1 mile in length and takes between 1-2 hours to complete with the adventure stations and trail segments along the way.
Tickets are $10 per person for children and adults. Infants (0-2) are free.
We love dogs, however, they are not allowed on the trail with customers due to the potential health concerns with dog droppings and bare feet. So sorry!
We have designed the manicured trail for bare feet, however, if you feel that you want to wear your shoes or take them with you on the trail, you are welcome to do so. We just ask that you stay off the middle section of the path designed for those wanting to walk bare foot on the softer part of the trail. On hot days when some parts of the trail have been sitting in the sun and it's hot, some customers prefer to put their shoes back on briefly until out of the hotter section.
The trail will not accommodate a stroller and so we recommend a carrier backpack for younger children.
There is nothing extra you need to do to prepare your feet for the trail experience. We have designed the trail for feet that are not normally barefoot and have added softer textures to part of the trail to make it easier for you to walk the full 1-mile trail. For people more advanced who prefer harder surfaces, you are welcome to walk next to the softer parts of the trail for a more natural experience. If you are not used to wearing sandals or walking barefoot, then you will be challenged by the textures, temperatures, and reflexology segments that manipulate your normally protected feet. Have fun, choose what's good for you, and make the experience yours!
The park is located at an elevation of 7,200 feet. Weather can change quickly, so we recommend dressing in layers. You can always leave extra items in your car.
We just opened the park at the beginning of July 2024 and will be open until the end of September 2024. This is a seasonal park and are closed during colder months.
Yes, our Barefoot Boutique sells a variety of affordable snacks you can buy.
Yes, we have picnic tables at the front of the park for you to sit and enjoy eating in the shade. We also have a picnic area halfway through the trail to rest and relax in, and you are welcome to eat there too. However, we ask that you pack your garbage back to the welcome area and dispose of it in our receptacles.
The Barefoot Boutique is our small onsite store that sells snacks and goodies, as well as
t-shirts, books, kids activity items, jewelry, footcare and body care products. Feel free to look around! Contact Leah Williams at our email address if you are local and want to sell your goods in our boutique! We are big supporters of small, cottage businesses and would love to highlight your products in our store.
Mornings are the best time of day in the summer when the temperatures are cooler and the trail has been less exposed by the direct sun light. Most of the park enjoys tree coverage, however, as the sun moves throughout the day, certain areas are more exposed than others.
We recommend bringing a backpack and carrying your own water and snacks. During very hot days, you may want to pack shoes/sandals for yourself or your little ones when you are at one of our 3 large labyrinths that are often exposed to the sun. Every person has a different tolerance to temperature and texture based off of your own unique foot sensitivity. The trail allows you to explore your comfort levels of walking barefoot, but it can be challenging too!
We clean and clear the trail every morning to provide you the most manicured version of the forest trail. However, we cannot guarantee that you won't encounter small rocks, sticks or pine cones that fall on the path after our morning check. Walking barefoot brings awareness to what you are walking on and requires more attention to the ground to stay safe and comfortable. We do our best but it's still a natural environment we cannot control.
